N.S. Offutt letter, 1863 Dec.

N.S. Offutt, a lieutenant in the Fifth Kentucky Cavalry of the Confederate army, wrote this letter in December, 1863, describing a year in his life to his father. Offutt related events in his life from the last time he saw his father, in August, 1862. He left home to join the Confederate army August 26 to escape arrest as a Southern sympathizer. Offutt enlisted in a brigade organized by General Abe Buford in Lexington, which drilled four miles from the city on the Harrodsburg and Lexington turnpike. His unit joined the retreat from Kentucky and later fought at the battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In March, 1863, Offutt's regiment was detached from Buford's command to that of General John Hunt Morgan. The regiment participated in the June raids in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Offutt was taken prisoner July 26, along with most of the command. He was held at Camp Chase for two months before being transferred to Johnson's Island. Offutt's letter described conditions of his imprisonment at length. He apparently achieved parole before this letter was written and stated he would not allow himself to be captured again unless he was wounded. Offutt expected the Confederacy would win its independence and that he would never make his home in Kentucky again. The envelope with this letter was addressed to Miss R.A. Offutt, who presumably was N.S. Offutt's sister. Offutt did not provide his father's name, and sent greetings to his mother and sister as well.
